Alan Gibbons Author Event

As part of LRE's annual author event, Alan Gibbons, author of The Edge, Scared to Death and the award winning Shadow of the Minotaur, gave a talk to year 7 students at Abbeyfield School. After hearing how he had become a writer, tips on writing and what a pleasure it is to read, his enthusiastic audience bombarded him with questions!
Alan then made his way to LRE's showroom at Booth Meadow House where over eager students, librarians, teachers and parents had made their way on a bitterly cold night. Alan recounted tales from his childhood—of being chased by a vicious poodle, of reading the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe in a wardrobe and discovering the enjoyment of writing. He proudly told us of the day Blue Peter called to say he was up for the Blue Peter Book Award. He won the award beating Philip Pullman, JK Rowling and Michael Morpurgo. Whilst making us laugh Alan also talked passionately about the importance of encouraging reading and the role of the school library. The quote of the night "the school library is the engine of learning" is something we can all agree with.
