Type of service:
Adulthood
Address:
71 Rectory Road, Rushden, Northamptonshire NN10 0AT
Telephone number:
03456043719
Service description:
Jobcentre Plus agencies (or “jobcentres”) are the public face of the Government’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Most UK towns and cities have a Jobcentre Plus, and it’s usually the first point of contact for unemployed adults.

Jobcentres provide services to:

• Adults attempting to find employment
• Adults who need financial aid due to lack of employment
• Adults who need financial aid to help with the living costs associated with finding a job
• Adults who need financial aid because an illness means they are unable to work

Financial aid (usually referred to as “benefits,” or sometimes as “welfare payments”) comes from the National Insurance system.

Jobcentre services include:

• In-house job-advisors
• Telephone advisors
• The Universal Jobmatch website (which is open to everyone)

Claims can be made for “benefits” such as:

• Contributions-Based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
• Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
• Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), formerly “Incapacity Benefit”
• Income Support

Please note: The DWP intends to replace the following “benefits” with Universal Credit in late 2017:
Income-based Jobseekers Allowance, Income-based Employment Support Allowance, Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit, Income Support, and Housing Benefit.

Jobseeker's Allowance

All claimants applying for JSA must spend at least 30 hours a week searching for jobs. Providing evidence of this while “signing on” is mandatory, and failure to comply will result in sanctions (an individual’s payments being stopped).

Getting Extra Help If You Have a Disability

Jobcentres can help you find disability-friendly employers in your area. They can refer you to a specialist work psychologist, if appropriate. They can also carry out an ‘employment assessment’ where you can discuss your skills and experience, and what kind of roles you’re interested in.

Their work coaches can tell you about programmes and grants to help you back into work. These include:

Work Choice - to help you find a job, and get support once you start work
Access to Work - money towards a support worker, or for the cost of equipment or travelling to work
Specialist Employability Support - to help you get ready for employment or become self-employed
