NHS - General Practitioners (GPs)

Type of service:
Health Services
Service description:
A general practitioner (GP) is a family medical doctor based in the community who treats patients with minor or chronic illnesses, orders tests, and makes referrals to specialists. They are the local gatekeepers for medical services and are typically your first point of contact with the NHS.

GPs deal with a whole range of health problems. They also provide health education, offer advice on smoking and diet, run clinics, give vaccinations, and carry out simple surgical operations.

GPs usually work in practices as part of a team that includes nurses, healthcare assistants, practice managers, receptionists, and other staff. Practices also work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as health visitors, midwives, mental health services and social care services.

Please note:People aged 14 or above with learning disabilities who are known to their local authority social services, and who are registered with a GP (who knows their medical history) are entitled to a free annual health check. For more information, please click here.
