Service description:
A dedicated team of children’s occupational therapists (who are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council) and support workers, who each have a wide range of specialisms, skills and expertise.

Occupational therapists work with children and young people who have difficulties carrying out activities of daily living that they would be expected to be able to do based on their age or developmental stage. This may be related to physical disability, developmental delay, sensory processing disorder, and coordination difficulties.

This service is for children and young people (from birth to school-leaving age) who are registered with a GP in Northamptonshire. They help children with self-care, play and leisure, as well as school participation.

- Self-Care Support: aids eating, drinking, using the toilet, dressing, and personal safety
- Play & Leisure Support: helps with access to fun, toys, and hobbies
- School Participation Support: aids access to the curriculum, use of classroom tools (for example pencils, scissors and rulers), and organisation within the school environment

The team’s support includes assessment and recommendations for specialist equipment (to aid seating, bathing. and toileting), which could mean minor adaptations to property and the environment. The team also assess motor skills and coordination, which will lead to a therapy plan.

All referrals should be sent to the Referral Management Centre. For referral information and advice, please phone 0300 111 1022 (9am-5pm, weekdays).
