The Specialist Support Service offers four Northamptonshire localities and each locality has a team specialising in support at different ages, Early Years, Primary and Secondary. This provides a needs based service for children with Special Education Needs and/or Autism aged 0-19. There is no need for a formal diagnosis.
The Early Help for Disabled Children’s Team work with families with children aged 5 – 25 years, where the child has a disability and the needs usually cover more than one area of development and require support from two or more agencies. The team is part of the SEND Specialist Support Services. The team is also a part of the Early Help and Prevention offer to families in Northamptonshire.
“Early Help” support is available for children and their families where there is a need for an Early Help Assessment and where the child’s special educational need or disability is a primary consideration. Support for children aged under 5 is offered through the local children’s centre.
The team support the whole family to access information and services which may be relevant to the needs of their child.
The team will assess and plan what is needed, working with the family, tackling the challenges faced by them. This is usually done through the Early Help Assessment (EHA) (formerly Common Assessment for Families (CAF) which the family may already be working on.
The team will offer input to Educational Health and Care meetings and Team around the Family meetings, to provide advice and information about local disability services.
When a case is allocated to the Early Help for Disabled Children’s Team, the intervention will be tailored according to the needs of the child and family. The team will use the EHA process including the risk and needs assessment to determine with the family the nature of the intervention. A tiered approach will be applied:
The team will offer advice and guidance, take the lead professional role and complete the Early Help Assessment.
The team will work with the family for a short term period of support.
Appointments are available between 9am and 5pm and can be up to an hour long. This is an opportunity to seek advice and support from one of our Autism and SEND Practitioners.
