The Specialist Support Service (SSS) operates in four Northamptonshire localities, and each locality has a team specialising in support at different ages, Early Years, Primary, and Secondary.
SSS offer support for a range of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) including autism (ASD). Visit their webpage to view the eligibility criteria.
The Autism Outreach team is a part of SSS. They provide a needs-based service for children with SEND and/or ASD aged 0-19. There is no need for a formal diagnosis. The Autism Outreach Team aims:
• To work within educational settings to empower staff to introduce, understand, and continue with strategies and interventions that enable young people with ASD to access learning and progress to their full potential.
• To work with families and carers to enable them to introduce structure and consistency into the home and community, and to enable a greater understanding of their child’s behaviour.
• To attend parent-run forums in the county, offering consultation appointments at FACT, ACE, and Special Friends each month, and to run parent workshops (Spectrum and Reflections). Visit their website for more details.
When a referral for more specific support is made (be it direct from parents/carers or via school), the evidence that the child is showing areas of specific need at home and/or school will be needed. These referrals are assessed by a panel of staff who meet each fortnight to ensure the appropriate support is offered to the child or young person. This could be visits, consultations, support, or advice.
Further support (which may include visits and observations in both home and school environments) will be subject to certain eligibility criteria. Information about the criteria and how to refer are on the SSS website.Appointments
Appointments are available between 9am and 5pm and can be up to an hour long. This is an opportunity to seek advice and support from one of their ASD and SEND practitioners.
