Katie Harrison from Deaf Connect gave an interesting talk at the Northamptonshire Federation of Disabled Sports recent meeting. She is the family co-ordinator for Deaf Connect and plans to host events around the county for children and young people. The information will be available on the Local Offer website. She used to be a competitive swimmer and she told us about her experiences of swimming as a young deaf person. The Local Offer lists 79 providers of services for people who are deaf and articles that may be of interest. We also have some Youtube clips that use British Sign Language (BSL). BSL training is also available and we list this too on our What's On page.
We also link to The Buzz which is the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) site specifically for deaf children and young people.
As usual, we have been busy and lead a varied work life on the Local Offer. We went to the first Gamenation event held by the Information Advice Support Service (IASS) and listened to a very interesting presentation by our e-safety officer about keeping safe online. Another event will be held in Daventry on 20 February 2016.
Julia Smith is the newest member of the Local Offer team and is going through the process of learning how all the pieces of the Local Offer fit together. She is putting together a one-page profile that describes herself and we look forward to adding it to the others about the Local Offer team.
The Learning Disability Partnership Board (LDPB) are always actively sharing their information with us to share with the learning disability community and they are holding their board meetings next week .
The Special Olympics for people with a learning disability is being started in Northamptonshire, and the LDPB have created a poster for it in Easy Read which can be found from our Easy Read tile.
We went to see the Local Offer Live 2016 in Leicester this week. It was interesting to see the different services in Leicestershire. If you live in the north of Northamptonshire you will be able to find their Local Offer through ours (look for Leicestershire). We went to some interesting workshops which made us think these would be good for our next live event, but our favourites had to be Canine Partners who came to Summer Sendsation for us but we didn’t get to watch as we were too busy. I have to add this because we all love a puppy picture!
It could be a busy weekend if you want to try the Paraswimming talent day as well which is on Sunday at Moulton College. Details about this are on our What's On page:
Disability Inclusive Sports Club run sessions every Sunday at Towcester Leisure Centre for children and young people.
Giggles Play are holding a drop in play session on Sunday which will give an opportunity to try their sensory equipment.
Have a great and busy weekend - from the Local Offer.
