Services for children and young people in Northamptonshire (aged 0-25) with special educational needs and disabilities.

DWP - Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

Type of service:
National Organisation
Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Caxton House, Tothill Street, Westminster, London SW1H 9NA
Service description:
As a higher education student living in England, you can apply for a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) if you have a disability, including a:

• long-term health condition
• mental health condition
• specific learning difficulty, e.g. dyslexia

You must also:

• be an undergraduate or postgraduate student (including Open University or distance learning)
• have a condition that affects your ability to study
• qualify for student finance from Student Finance England
• be studying on a course that lasts at least a year

You need proof of your eligibility for this allowance. It is of note that if you had a diagnostic assessment by an education psychologist or similar professional when you were under the age 16, this will need to be repeated for this allowance.

You must meet the definition of disability under the Equality Act 2010.

The support you get depends on your individual needs and not on income.

DSAs don’t cover disability-related costs you’d have if you weren’t attending a course, or costs that any student might have
Age range:
18 years - 65 years
Eligibility criteria:
  • Age - Adulthood (18-25)
Referral route:
  • Contact service direct
  • No referral needed
