Post 16 Education Providers
CANTO is a small college specialising in educating and supporting young people with additional needs.
We offer support to learners with:
- Behavioural, emotional and social difficulties
- Moderate to severe learning difficulties
- Health care needs (diabetes, epilepsy)
Students work in small groups of 5 or 6 with a tutor, and where needed, a support worker. We can also offer 1:1 levels of support if required.
We have been established in Northampton for over 20 years and have extensive experience with this client group. We have a wide range of facilities available to the learners to assist them with their development.
We have young people travel to us from all across Northamptonshire and neighbouring counties.
Our mission statement states that we will endeavour to work effectively and co-operatively with individuals who live with challenges arising from learning, behavioural, emotional and social difficulties, to progress their abilities, skills and qualifications.
We have a contract with the Education Funding Agency to provide educational study programmes for learners. We also work closely with social care teams to provide a service to young people accessing social care.
We work closely with schools to promote a positive transition from full time education into post 16 education and training. We attend schools careers conventions on a regular basis.
In our most recent OFSTED inspection (July 2014) CANTO received a Grade 2 – ‘Good’ provision. This is one of the highest scores in recent OFSTED Inspections of Northamptonshire providers of training and education. OFSTED have stated the following about our provision:
‘Learners make good progress, and achieve high success rates on most qualifications, including functional skills’.
‘Learners develop confidence and good employability skills through work experience and community activities’
‘Good partnerships benefit learners by providing support, work placements and progression opportunities’.
‘Caring staff give good consistent support to learners, many of whom have complex and high levels of need.’
Learners will follow a study programme that includes:
Personal and social development, vocational qualifications, and work experience. CANTO works closely with students, and their parents/carers, to establish the aims of the study programme and develop a learning plan that can meet needs whilst enabling students to achieve their potential. Reviews are held regularly with the students, parents/carers and other professionals working with the student to ensure that opportunities for personal and social development are met.
We offer a structured timetable, including independent living skills, Maths, English, ICT, vocational and enrichment options as well as work experience placements.
We offer a range of vocational subjects including music, drama, dance, art, small animal care, photography, sports and cooking. The majority of these subjects are offered as an enrichment subject as well as offering qualification opportunities.
There is a strong focus on functional skills from Pre-entry through to Level 1. These are delivered both as stand alone sessions and embedded throughout other subjects.
We are able to offer a wide variety of work placements to all students with local employers. Students undertake a variety of tasks whilst being supported by CANTO staff. There is further opportunity for unsupported work placements if this is deemed suitable.
Overarching all of this is the additional support offered to all students. Students are assessed regularly and support given appropriately. We have a number of highly trained and experienced staff members who are trained in counselling, assisting with some medical needs, and occupational therapy and specialist communication amongst many other forms. All of this aims to make CANTO as accessible as possible. If for any reason the support needs cannot be met by CANTO staff then joint working with one of our many partners is accessed.
CANTO works with other professionals in ensuring that transitions to and from CANTO are as smooth and stress free for the student and their families as possible through a variety of methods designed to meet the needs of the individual.
Our whole organisation is designed to support people with additional needs to achieve their potential.
We do run a summer school aimed at young people who have left school and have yet to make a decision on their future. The summer school is very popular and feedback from this has always been very positive.
Supported internships are available to young people with an education, health and care plan at this college.
