Voluntary car schemes operate with volunteer drivers using their own vehicles to take passengers to pre-booked destinations. These are often for medical appointments, but can also be for other reasons.
The schemes typically charge an annual membership fee. The passenger then pays the driver for any trips - this is calculated on mileage.
Passengers book a journey in advance with the scheme co-ordinator who matches up the travel requirement with the drivers available. Drivers collect passengers from their home, taking them to their appointment and returning them back home.
Services are often subsidised by Northamptonshire County Council.
There is an annual registration fee to be part of the scheme - £20.00 for 12 months or £11.00 for 6 months. In addition to this, passengers pay the driver 45p per mile to cover his/her expenses with a minimum charge of £2.50. Passengers can take someone with them at no extra cost. Please note that if an appointment takes longer than one hour, the driver may go home and come back for the return journey, and this may increase the cost.
The scheme is very busy, with up to 65 journeys being provided every week day. Bookings for the scheme should be made as well in advance as possible, and must be made at least 2 working days in advance.
