Voluntary Car Scheme

Voluntary car schemes operate with volunteer drivers using their own vehicles to take passengers to pre-booked destinations. These are often for medical appointments, but can also be for other reasons.

The schemes typically charge an annual membership fee. The passenger then pays the driver for any trips - this is calculated on mileage.

Passengers book a journey in advance with the scheme co-ordinator who matches up the travel requirement with the drivers available. Drivers collect passengers from their home, taking them to their appointment and returning them back home.

Services are often subsidised by Northamptonshire County Council.

The DACT Volunteer Car Scheme assists anyone who has difficulty using public transport to get to any medical appointments.

Medical appointments might include:

• GP Practices
• Health Centre
• Hospitals
• Dentists
• Opticians

Drivers will take passengers to wherever their appointment may be. Although most appointments will be for GP practices/hospitals in Northamptonshire, the drivers also travel on a regular basis to hospitals in other counties, such as Oxford, Birmingham, Coventry and sometimes even to London.

The driver will provide wheelchair assistance where required. All volunteer drivers are dedicated to ensuring passengers are given whatever support they need to make their trips as stress-free as possible.

Minibus Group Hire

Minibus group hire schemes make wheelchair-accessible minibuses available to local community groups (and clubs) at affordable rates. This can be with or without a driver. DACT also provides MiDAS training courses for anyone that needs this level of certification to drive minibuses. This is a National standard, widely recognised all across the country.

DACT Days Out

This exciting programme of trips has been established to provide our members of all ages with a wonderful variety of social trips ranging from Pub Lunches to Days at the Seaside. They are an ideal way to make new friends, renew old acquaintances and see interesting places. The trips are good value for money.
