Sport in Northamptonshire

Premier sport in Northamptonshire

Northampton’s premier rugby team is The Saints (COYS) based at Franklin’s Gardens in Northampton. They lifted the Premiership title in 2014 and have a host of internationals in their team.

The county’s professional football club (The Cobblers) were promoted promoted to division 1 of the football league in 2016 after a dramatic year with the club threatened with closure. Semi-professional clubs, such as Kettering’s Poppies, and Brackley town can also be followed.

Northamptonshire Steelbacks are the county's cricket club, based near Abington Park. They are particularly successful at one day cricket winning the T20 Blast competition twice in the last five years.

Silverstone circuit near Towcester hosts one of the Grand Prix motor races each summer as well as other racing events.

Towcester racecourse hosts regular horse and dog racing.

Northamptonshire Sport provides opportunities for people to take part in sport, physical activities and recreation in the county. You can search a full list of sports clubs around the county from American football to trampolining, rollerblading to rugby league.

This Girl Can

This Girl Can is a national campaign developed to encourage female sport and activity. It's a celebration of active women up and down the country who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their face gets.

Leisure centres

Leisure centres across the county provide a range of different activities for young people.

Youth clubs

Youth clubs in Northamptonshire are run by a range of different organisations, such as clubs, societies and voluntary groups.

Youth Works provides a range of activities for children and young people after school, in the evenings and during the school holidays in Kettering and Corby.

Clubs for Young People Northamptonshire (CYPN) is a charity that works closely with the community to ensure that there are a variety of safe but enjoyable activities for children from the ages of 8 to 19, from roller skating events to national boxing competitions.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) Programme is a real adventure from beginning to end. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from. You just need to be aged between 14 and 24 and realise there’s more to life than sitting on a sofa watching life pass you by.

Cycling in Northamptonshire

Northamptonshire Highways manage a wide network of cycling facilities across the county. You can use the cycling journey planning websites to help plan the best route to your destination by bike.

Cycle CoNNect is a 24 hour on-street bike hire service in Northampton, with bikes available to hire across the network at any time, every day.
