Free NHS health checks - healthy workplaces

The NHS Health Check is a national programme intended to identify any potential health risks before they become a problem.

It’s like a midlife MOT for people aged between 40 and 74 to check that some of the body’s most important systems are all running smoothly. Among other things, blood pressure, cholesterol, and BMI will all be checked and results given to the person.

Information for staff - how to get your free NHS health check

Thousands of people have already received their NHS Health Check to make sure that they have clear information about their health and can reduce their risk of developing health problems in the future. Why not join them?

Information for employers

Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia - the good news is that these conditions can often be prevented.

Some businesses arrange for their staff to have NHS Health Checks carried out at work. To find out more, contact Frank Earley at FEarley@northamptonshire.gov.uk.

What happens at an NHS Health Check?

  • The check takes about 20 to 30 minutes
  • The person is asked some simple questions. For example, about their family history and any medication they are currently taking
  • Height, weight, age, sex and ethnicity will all be recorded
  • Blood pressure will be taken
  • A simple blood test to check your cholesterol level

After the NHS Health Check, the results are discussed with the person, and they are  given personalised advice on how to lower any risks and stay healthy.

Where an NHS Health Check takes place in a workplace setting, information from the check is transferred, securely, to the person’s GP so that it is available to the person and their GP in the future.
