Volunteering in libraries

The diverse range of services available in libraries provide vital lifelines for our communities and it would be impossible to deliver these services and facilities without the valuable contribution of hundreds of volunteers, who willingly give up their time to support us.

Benefits of volunteering

The benefits of volunteering are equally varied. Whether you just want to meet new people, give something back to your community, or gain the skills and confidence to help you get back into the workplace, volunteering is a great way to do it.

How do I become a volunteer?

You can register your interest in a volunteering opportunity by applying online via the Get Involved Hub. There will then be an informal interview process and all successful volunteers will be asked to supply details of referees. Please note that some roles are subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

All necessary training will be provided and every volunteer will receive a Volunteer Handbook to help you get the most from your journey. Search the Get Involved Hub for all current library volunteering vacancies​.

What could I do? 

There are a wide variety of roles to suit all ages from helping to deliver children’s activities to providing much needed computer skills support as an IT Buddy.

​Business support

Helping to manage our stock and shop displays or assisting with regular surveys undertaken in our libraries.

Children and families support (under 5s)

Leading or helping with regular activities such as Rhymetime or Story Stomp sessions.

Children and families support (over 5s)

Running craft activities and events, or for younger volunteers aged 14-17, why not help us to deliver the Summer Reading Challenge.

Community support

Facilitating a regular Language Café or setting up an intergenerational project in your library.

Creative arts

Helping to deliver craft activities or create eye catching displays in the library.

Customer support

Welcoming customers when they arrive at the library, assisting them with the use of self-service machines or just chatting with regulars over a cup of coffee.

Digital Support

Helping people to become more digitally fluent by becoming an IT Buddy or assisting customers with online job applications and form filling.

Events and fundraising

Helping to put on events in libraries such as talks and quiz nights and generating much needed additional funds to support future activities.

Healthy living

Becoming a Health Walk Leader, supporting and encouraging people to lead more active and healthy lifestyles.

Heritage and culture

Helping people to undertake research about their local or family history.

Literary support

Running sessions to support and encourage people of all ages and abilities to read, both for pleasure and for information.

Outdoor activities

Turning your hand to a bit of gardening or helping to maintain outside spaces.

Young adult support

Running a Homework or Coding Club or a starting a specific interest group like Manga or photography.
