Cycle to school

Why cycle to school?

Cycling is an effective, sustainable mode of travel to school and is also a great way to help children get more exercise into their day. Cycling also gives children the opportunity to learn how to explore and navigate their environment safely on their own giving them independence. It is inexpensive, good for the environment, and can help cut down on the congestion from the 29% of trips between 8 and 9am in Great Britain caused by the school run.

How to do it

Cycling to school helps children to develop road safety skills and learn how to manage risk gradually. Of course, an adult can always accompany younger children and help older kids get used to their route until they’re ready to ride alone.

Bikeability training is available in most primary schools across Northamptonshire and can be invaluable in helping to give children the skills necessary to ride to school.

Many schools in towns can be accessed by using off-road routes – download one of our cycle maps to plan the best route.

Safer Routes to School

Northamptonshire Highways run a Safer Routes to School programme, designed to encourage and assist pupils to walk or cycle by working closely with the county’s schools.
