How it works

The stages

Taking place over five days from Wednesday 15 to Sunday 19 June, the 2016 edition of the race was one of just four multi-day stage races on the season-long programme of races for the world’s top riders and teams.

Stage one - Wednesday 15 June

Stage two - Thursday 16 June

Stage three - Friday 17 June

Stage four - Saturday 18 June

Stage five - Sunday 19 June

The race

Start

At the start, the teams and riders will be there about an hour before the race in order to prepare and meet and greet the crowds. Before the race begins each team will be welcomed onto the podium for photographs.

Queen of the Mountains

Each of the five stages of the Women’s Tour will have two classified climbs, where the peloton will prove who is the strongest climber. The jersey will be awarded each day and the classification leader will, with the help of her teammates, attempt to defend the orange polka dots on the roads of the next day’s stage. These climbs are known as the Strava Queen of the Mountains (QOM).

Sprints

Each of the five stages of the Women's Tour will have two sprint sections.  Riders will battle for bonus points at two intermediate Chain Reaction Cycles Sprints during the stage and at the stage finish.

The Finish

The race finish sees the winning cyclists being presented with their jerseys on the podium.

The jerseys

Within the Aviva Women's Tour there are five leaders' jerseys, presented following every stage to the rider leading that competition's classification.

The Aviva Yellow Jersey

Awarded to the rider leading The Aviva Women's Tour overall, the Aviva Yellow Jersey is what every rider in the Tour is seeking to pull on. The Aviva Yellow Jersey is easily identifiable in the peloton, showing you who leads the race overall.

2015 winner: Lisa Brennauer, Velocio SRAM
2014 winner:
Marianne Vos, Rabo Liv

Chain Reaction Cycles Points Jersey

Awarded to the race's best sprinter, the Chain Reaction Cycles Points Jersey is the Aviva Women's Tour's equivalent of the Tour de France's green jersey.

Riders will battle for bonus points at two intermediate Chain Reaction Cycles Sprints during each stage and at the stage finish each day. The first 15 riders across the finish line are awarded points on a 15 down to 1 basis, with the rider who has accumulated the most points so far wearing the new-for-2015 blue and white jersey.

2015 winner: Lisa Brennauer, Velocio SRAM
2014 winner: Marianne Vos, Rabo Liv

Strava Queen of the Mountains Jersey

Awarded to the best climber in the Aviva Women's Tour, riders battle for points at two designated Strava Queen of the Mountains climbs on each stage of the race.

Each stage will feature two designated Strava climbs with the first six riders across the summit winning points, on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.

The rider who has accumulated the most points will wear the Strava Queen of the Mountains jersey.

2015 winner: Melissa Hoskins, Orica AIS
2014 winner: Sharon Laws, UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling

Best British Rider Jersey

The Premier Inn Best British Rider Jersey will be awarded to the leading British rider on General Classification following each day's stage, creating a race within the race for the British riders keen to perform on home roads, and allowing spectators to easily pick out the leading British rider in the Aviva Life Women's Tour.

2015 winner: Hannah Barnes, UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling
2014 winner:
Lucy Garner, Great Britain

Best Young Rider Jersey

The Best Young Rider Jersey, or white jersey, will be awarded to the leading Under-23 rider on General Classification following each day's stage.

2015 winner: Hannah Barnes, UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling
2014 winner:
Rossella Ratto, Estado de Mexico Faren
