Winter weather – update – January 13, 2010 – 4:30pm

13 January 2010

Northamptonshire County Council, along with its highways service provider MGWSP, is working around the clock on the county's roads as snow continues to fall in much of the county. Snow showers are fairly light but it is settling and showers are expected to continue into the evening.

The council has received some delivery of salt today and further deliveries are scheduled for Thursday and Friday this week. The replenishment of stock has allowed the council to continue in the treatment of the road network as appropriate.

In order to comply with national guidance and conserve salt stocks a mixture of salt/grit will be used. This mix will also be used for the treatment of the footways and refilling of the bins which the council is continuing to do. The mix extends the council’s resources but remains an excellent way to ensure routes are kept clear and safe for the travelling public. Refills for bins can be requested through Street Doctor – telephone number 0845 601 1113.

With the predicted onset of freezing conditions this evening the council will be treating the network according to the weather conditions.

Although the priority routes are receiving treatment the weather forecast predicts icy conditions and drivers, pedestrians and the travelling public are urged to take extra caution on the roads and drive appropriate to the conditions.

In light of the prolonged adverse weather conditions, the council is aware of the accelerated and worsening deterioration of the highways network and is beginning to address this, although it will take some time to work through the backlog of repairs. Resources will be diverted as conditions permit to carry out road repairs and maintenance crews will be working throughout the weekend to address the priority list of repairs.

Overnight the weather will be generally dry but remain cloudy. Mist or fog patches developing in places, perhaps with occasional light drizzle. Temperatures will fall below zero making ice likely and the decision has been taken to salt the priority routes from 6:00pm this evening.
