Warning over bogus council telephone calls

14 June 2010

Northamptonshire County Council is warning residents about bogus telephone callers claiming to be from the council.

The council has received complaints from people who have been contacted by cold callers who say they are from the council and are offering loft and wall cavity insulation. In some cases, the caller has become rude and aggressive.

The county council does not offer this service and council staff are not making these calls. Instead, residents are advised not to give out any personal information or take-up any offer.

Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage, cabinet member for customers and communities said: “These calls are not being made by the county council and we do not offer any loft or wall insulation services. During these tough economic times, it is likely that more of these types of scams will appear so it’s important that residents are on their guard and stop and think before agreeing to anything.

“Where possible, it would be helpful for consumers to ask for the name of the person calling and also a phone number, without giving any of their personal details or agreeing to a visit of course, as this will help trading standards in their investigation.

“Trading standards will be looking into this scam more closely, but in the meantime, anyone who has any concerns can get advice by contacting trading standards by telephoning Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.”
