Northampton schools to receive inclusion award

Six Northampton schools supported by Northamptonshire County Council’s Behaviour and Curriculum Inclusion Team (BACIN) have had their commitment to helping all their students achieve their potential highlighted with an internationally-recognised award.

The Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) will be awarded to the six schools at a presentation on Thursday (30 SEPT).

To achieve the award, the schools had to demonstrate they’re committed to creating an environment and opportunities for all students to succeed, as well as promoting access and diversity. They are assessed on ten separate elements, including: leadership and management; the learning environment; learner progress; and community involvement.

Councillor Andrew Grant, cabinet member for children and young people said: “It’s wonderful to see these six schools singled out for their excellent work in helping all their children to achieve their potential, irrespective of their background or their personal circumstances. We know that schools where inclusion, both social and behavioural, is a priority are better equipped to deal with challenges, have lower rates of truancy and exclusions, and are more likely to create a learning environment where students aspire to achieve and enjoy learning.”

Gaining the IQM does not depend on the school’s attainment in exam results but instead it focuses on learning and achievement in its widest sense and looks at how schools see differences as opportunities for learning The schools receiving the award are:

  • Kingsthorpe College
  • Bridgewater Primary School
  • Hopping Hill Primary School
  • Parklands Primary School
  • Eldean Primary School
  • Eastfield Primary School

Pupils from the schools will perform a variety of dance and song routines to an invited audience including representatives of Northamptonshire County Council, teachers, governors and parents.

IQM is working with more than 3,000 schools nationally and internationally to promote and recognise inclusion in schools.
