Council launches new initiative to improve children's language skills

16 May 2011

Northamptonshire County Council is to launch a pirate-themed project to help improve youngsters’ speaking and listening skills.

With the help of Captain Conversation and his Chit Chat Chest, teachers and childcare professionals will be introducing children all over Northamptonshire to a variety of games and activities designed to stimulate conversation.

The aim of the Message in a Bottle initiative is to support the development of children’s linguistic and social skills. It also aims to increase parental understanding and involvement in their children’s language development, so they can further support this at home, while promoting the fun and excitement that sharing books, rhymes and poems can bring.

Throughout the summer term schools, children’s centres and nurseries will receive a promotional bottle containing an instructional scroll and a CD containing a variety of diverse and imaginative ideas including Walk the Plank, a describing game and Whispering Waves similar to childhood perennial Chinese Whispers game.

The initiative is to be launched at Kingsthorpe Grove Primary School at 10:30 a.m., Monday 16 May with a pirate-themed dressing up day for the school's reception classes.
