New civic year heralds start of webcasting era

18 May 2011

Northamptonshire County Council is to begin the new civic year with the launch of a webcasting service to broadcast selected council meetings online.

The annual meeting of the council take place tomorrow (Thurs) and will be the first meeting of full council to be webcast. Viewers will be able to observe the election of the county’s chairman and deputy chairman as well as the annual address from the leader of the council.

Councillor David Mackintosh, county council cabinet member for strategy, communications and external relations, said: “Councillors elected by county residents attend meetings where decisions are made about local issues. Now everyone can see these decisions being made and witness local democracy in action wherever and whenever they like.

“By webcasting meetings, we want to open up County Hall to new audiences and give local residents who can’t attend meetings the chance to be more involved in the local democratic process.”

Tomorrow’s webcast can be accessed by visiting the council’s website and following the link on the home page. Webcasts will be archived and available to view after the meetings.
