A series of flood fairs are taking place this week to offer information and advice to homeowners and businesses, starting with an event in Thrapston tomorrow (Wednesday 2nd November)
The events have been organised by Northamptonshire County Council in partnership with the Environment Agency and Anglian Water, who will each have stands at the fairs and staff available to give information and advice.
With more than 23,000 properties in the county at risk from flooding, it is essential that people who could be affected know what to do before and during a flooding incident affecting their home or business.
The fairs will inform people of how responsibility for flooding and water management is now handled as part of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 and the Flood Risk Regulations 2009.
The county council has organised the events as part of its new role as the lead local flood authority for the county
Also at the flood fairs, people will be asked their to give their views on a new flood and water management strategy being developed by the county council. The strategy, which will be published next year, will detail how issues surrounding flood and water will be managed in the future.
People attending the Northampton Flood Fair will also have the opportunity to give their initial view on a Surface Water Management Plan for the town. The plan outlines the preferred surface water management strategy within identified areas. A member of the project team will be available at the Northampton event on 4th November to talk about the plan and collect feedback.
Councillor Ben Smith, county council cabinet member for environment said: "Northamptonshire County Council is looking forward to developing partnership working as part of our new role as the lead local flood authority.
"We hope many people will attend the Flood Fairs to learn more about how to protect their homes and businesses, as well as to give us the opportunity to talk to people face to face to get their views."
