Senior representatives from Northamptonshire County Council met with Transport Secretary Justine Greening (Mon July 9) to showcase the innovative work taking place in the county to transform the highways infrastructure.
Council Leader Jim Harker led the delegation which demonstrated how, at a strategic level, the Northamptonshire Arc concept has helped underpin economic growth, connectivity and environmental biodiversity.
The discussions also centred on how progress has been made on an operational level, including the innovative new highways maintenance initiative, street lighting PFI and the transformation of how subsidised bus transport is provided in the county.
Cllr Harker said: “I’m delighted that we have had this opportunity to talk directly to the secretary of state and show all the great work which has been going on in Northamptonshire.
“I think we have demonstrated just what can be achieved with innovative thinking and making the best of the finances available particularly in the current economic climate.
“I’m proud of what has been achieved already in Northamptonshire but this only the beginning: we have many more great projects ahead and I’m confident that this will contribute to bringing a better, more prosperous county.”
The Secretary of State also heard how the county council is exploring new ways of financing projects, such as targeting European funding to bring the necessary improvements to the A14.
