Temporary changes to town centre road system to help improve traffic flow

06 January 2012

Changes will be introduced to the road system in Northampton town centre after emergency work has been carried out to ensure the safety of a fire-damaged listed building in Bridge Street.

Once scaffolding has been erected to support the structure of the former Angel Hotel, which houses the Balloon Bar and Fat Cats, the amendments will help traffic to flow more efficiently.

The changes include:

• Bridge Street to become one-way for all traffic - travelling down the hill (southwards) - except for buses which will be allowed to travel in both directions on a priority based system.

• St Giles Square to open as a one-way street to all traffic (including buses and taxis), heading westwards into George Row. Cyclists will still be able to travel eastwards.

• Angel Street to become a one-way street between Guildhall Road and Fetter Street. The section of Angel street to the west of Fetter street will be closed and operate on a two way basis for access only.

The timing of when the changes to the road system will be introduced is dependent upon how long it takes to put up the scaffolding. While this work is taking place, Bridge Street will remain closed.

In addition, Bridge Street will be closed to vehicles this weekend between 10pm on Friday and 4am on Saturday and 10pm on Saturday and 4am on Sunday. However there will be pedestrian access during this time.

The temporary traffic orders will be in place while the scaffolding remains.
