Countywide rollout of free funding for eligible two year olds

12 March 2013

Parents of two year olds across Northamptonshire could get funded early learning thanks to the countywide rollout of a funding project.

Northamptonshire County Council is extending a programme currently running in Wellingborough to provide up to 15 hours a week of funded early education for two year old children who meet the eligibility criteria.

The funded places will be available from the beginning of April and families are being invited to find out if they qualify.

Cabinet member for customers and communities Councillor Heather Smith said: “The legal entitlement for two year olds comes into force in September but the good news for Northamptonshire is that we have funding from April.

“Unlike the free entitlement for three and four year olds, not all two year olds will be eligible. Instead, set criteria will be applied to assess whether a two year old is eligible. That’s why we’re asking parents to check their eligibility.”

The council estimates that up to 1,576 two year olds could be eligible for the funding. Currently 17,940 three and four year olds in the county receive free entitlement.

Parents can find out more and check if they qualify using the council’s online eligibility checker:

Parents who don’t have internet access at home can visit their local library where there is free use of the council website.
