Overnight road closures as railway station highways works near completion

08 November 2013

As roadworks outside Northampton Railway Station are near completion, a series of road closures are needed so final resurfacing can take place.

Because this is such a busy area of the town the closures will take place overnight to minimise disruption.

These highways works have been targeted for completion before the December Christmas work embargo on the highways begins.

When will the work take place?

Resurfacing work will take place outside the station in the daytime on Monday, November 11, and Tuesday, November 12. No road closures will be necessary on these days but temporary traffic lights will continue to be used to manage traffic flows.

The first road closure will start on Wednesday, November 13, from 7pm until 5am the following day, when St James Road eastbound (towards the railway station) will be closed at the junction of the A428 Spencer Bridge Road.

This closure will be repeated on Thursday, November 14, between 7pm and 5am the following day.

During the closures, traffic will be diverted along the A428 Spencer Bridge Road and there will be access to the railway station off St Andrews Road as usual.

Friday, November 15

Again the closure will be between 7pm and 5am the following day. This time St Peter’s Way will be closed in both directions between the Gas Street roundabout and the railway station.

Traffic that would normally approach the railway station from the Gas Street roundabout will be diverted up Horsemarket and along Grafton Street.

Eastbound traffic on St James Road will be diverted away from these works in St Peters Way northward along St Andrews Road on to Grafton Street. Access to Gold Street will be maintained via Marefair only.

Monday, November 18 – 4am to 7pm

Marefair will be closed with traffic diverted via the Gas Street roundabout, up Horsemarket. Temporary signals will be installed at the junction of Horsemarket and Gold Street, which will allow access into Gold Street (right turn) and Marefair (left turn). Exit from Marefair will be via Freeschool Street.

Tuesday, November 19

Marefair will be closed with traffic diverted via the Gas Street roundabout and up Horsemarket. Temporary signals will be installed at the junction of Horsemarket and Gold Street, allowing access into Gold Street (right turn) and Marefair (left turn). Exit from Marefair will be via Freeschool Street.

St Andrews will be closed to through traffic with diversions via St James Road and Spencer Bridge Road for the northbound traffic and Grafton Street and Horsemarket for southbound. Access will be maintained to the railway station off St Andrews Road from the Grafton Street/Spencer Bridge Junction.

Wednesday, November 20 to Friday, November 23

It is the intention that line painting, ironworks and other associated works for signals installation will be completed as the work is progressed during the closures described above but, if not, night closures over these dates are being allocated as a contingency.
