Northamptonshire County Council’s fire and rescue service is inviting young people to join a new Community Fire Cadet scheme.
The Community Fire Cadet scheme
The Community Fire Cadets is new initiative aimed at young people being delivered by Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with Clubs for Young People Northamptonshire.
Each cadet will be issued with a uniform and personal protection equipment. They will get the chance to use specially-adapted fire equipment and complete fire drills using fire-fighting equipment such as hoses, ladders and breathing apparatus. The programme will also include swift water training at Nene Whitewater Centre.
Who can take part?
The scheme is not just for those who wish to join the fire service or uniformed services but for any young person aged aged 13 to 17 who enjoys being active in their community, meeting new people, learning new skills and would like to become an ambassador for the fire and rescue service.
Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage, county council cabinet member strategic infrastructure, economic growth and public protection, said: “This is a great opportunity for young people in the county. By joining up to the Community Fire Cadets scheme, they will learn how to work as a team, they will improve their communication skills and see their confidence increase. They will develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives, all while having fun and making new friends at the same time.“
Background to the scheme
The one year programme is part of the national Fire Cadet initiative and aims to develop citizenship in young people and to develop fire and rescue ambassadors who will work along side fulltime and retained fire fighters to support the prevention agenda.
The informal sessions will be facilitated by qualified and experienced youth workers plus Community Fire Cadets will also have the opportunity to plan and deliver their own community based projects and to be involved in fundraising events.
Interested in joining the scheme?
The first session will take place on Tuesday 24th September at Mereway Fire Station from 7pm to 9pm.
Anyone interested in taking part can download an application form and return it to Clubs for Young People Northamptonshire by Friday 30th August 2013.
