County’s Emergency Planning Team urges community to be ready for an evacuation

01 October 2014

Northamptonshire County Council’s Emergency Planning team is inviting people to prepare an ‘emergency grab bag’ in the rare event they need to evacuate their home.

The Emergency Planning team is encouraging families to prepare for an emergency situation such as a flood or a fire by packing some essential items into a bag so they would be ready to leave their home at short notice.

Cllr André González de Savage, county council cabinet member for strategic infrastructure, economic growth and public protection, said: “We all hope we will never find ourselves in a situation where we have to evacuate our home, but if the worst happens, it’s important to be prepared.

“There are basic essentials we would all need, such as a torch, spare batteries, prescription medication and a phone charger, but many people forget about those harder to replace items like important documents and family photos.

“Having to evacuate your home is an incredibly stressful situation and you’re unlikely to be thinking clearly at such a time, so it’s worth preparing an ‘emergency grab bag’, or at least a checklist, in advance to save you time in an emergency.”

What should you take in an emergency?

The Emergency Planning team suggests including the following items:

  • Contact information for family, friends and emergency services – refer to the Household Emergency Plan, which can be downloaded from www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/emergencies
  • Toiletries
  • Medication and prescription details
  • Identity documents
  • First aid kit
  • Torch
  • Spare batteries
  • Insurance details
  • Spare keys
  • Special items for babies or children
  • Items for your pets
  • USB memory stick with a back-up of your computer
  • Irreplaceable sentimental items

The message is being issued as part of a campaign called Don’t Be A Numpty, which offers advice on staying safe in a range of situations from flooding to heatwaves. A special Numpties video explaining the importance of preparing an ‘emergency grab bag’ and the items that should be included can be viewed by visiting www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/emergencies.
