Shacks Barn Farm, Silverstone, Towcester, Northamptonshire NN12 8TB
The Shacks Barn and Buckingham RDA provides therapeutic horse riding for people with a disability or special need. Riding can be particularly beneficial to people who have profound and multiple learning difficulties because it is multi-sensory experience. It can help with communication and social skills, build confidence, and awareness of others.
Rides take place in an outdoor arena and sometimes around the local fields and hedgerows. There is also a purpose-built barn for other horse-related activities such as grooming. The group owns one horse, but has several horses and ponies on loan from local private owners.
Lessons are taught by RDA-approved instructors. Each rider has up to three helpers, depending on their level of need. An RDA physiotherapist is on-hand on for guidance.
Riding takes place on Saturday mornings (9.30am-12noon), fortnightly. Clothing and equipment can be supplied on loan. Spaces are usually in very high-demand and there is a waiting list.
Please note: the Shacks Barn and Buckingham RDA is a registered charity (No. 1145480) run by volunteers, and therefore relies on donations.
