Service description:
Inpatient Unit (01604 678030)
The hospice has a 16-bedded adult inpatient unit that accepts referrals for patients aged 18 and over who live in Northampton and South Northamptonshire, who have complex care needs, and who are suffering from a life-limiting illness when a cure is no longer possible. Short-stay admissions can often help patients return home with an improved quality-of-life. The inpatient unit also offers expert end-of-life care and support, as well as support for family and friends.

Day Hospice (01604 678144)
The Day Hospice provides a comprehensive recreational programme and practical advice about end-of-life care. The Cynthia Spencer Hospice Charity is currently funding the expansion of the Day Hospice service. During 2017 the service will be expanded from 2 to 5 days a week. The Day Hospice will become a specialist countywide centre offering rehabilitative specialist care. It will help patients maintain normality of life function and independence (within the constraints of the patient’s condition and wishes). The expanded Day Hospice will deliver programmes of care on an individual or group basis over a period of 6 to 12 weeks. The programmes will help patients with the management of breathlessness, fatigue, pain, and exercise. It will also promote independence using aids and adaptations.

Clinical Nurse Specialists
Palliative care clinical nurse specialists are registered nurses with specialist knowledge and qualifications in cancer and palliative care. They provide information and advice on pain control and symptoms, and also provide psychological support for patients. The nurses also spend time explaining the patient’s illness and its management, as well as planning future care.

Lymphoedema Service
The countywide Lymphoedema Service is based at Cynthia Spencer Hospice. The service is provided in a specially-adapted outpatient setting for patients with lymphoedema (which is a result of cancer and/or its treatment). The aim of the treatment is to reduce the swelling and symptoms. The service’s specialist nurses have undertaken additional training to help patients to reduce the impact of this condition on their everyday lives.

Therapy Team
Their therapy team is made up of occupational therapists, physiotherapists and a palliative neurology team. The three teams work together to ensure both inpatients and outpatients maintain a quality of life that allows them to live as independently as possible.
