Access adoption records

If you were adopted as a child, you are able to access your birth records.

Northamptonshire County Council Adopted Adults Service is a registered agency which offers both access to records and advice on intermediary services to adopted adults who:

  • live within Northamptonshire
  • are prepared to travel to Northamptonshire to access records held by Northamptonshire

Adopted adults have a legal right to obtain information about their adoption and biological family history.

Many adopted people decide at some point in their lives to find out more about the circumstances which led to their adoption and to seek information about their biological families.

The Adopted Adults Service believes that the impact of adoption is likely to affect anyone adopted, or associated with an adoption at some point in their lives. We aim to provide support to individuals and families who wish to explore their adoption history.

How to obtain your records

At the age of 18 people who were adopted can legally apply for information that will enable them to obtain a copy of their original birth certificate. You can do this by:

  • Online
    Visit www.gov.uk/adoption-records
  • Post
    Adoption Section Room C202
    General Register Office
    Her Majesty’s Passport Office
    Smedley Hydro
    Trafalgar Road
    Southport PR8 2HH
  • Telephoning
     0300 123 1837 (selecting Option 8)

The form that the General Register Office requires you to complete is ‘Access to Birth Certificate Information before Adoption’ [BIBA 1].

Were you adopted before 12 November 1975?

If you were adopted before 12 November 1975 you will be required to attend an appointment with an adoption social worker before your birth details, applied for using BIBA 1 (see above), are released.

You can do this by contacting the Adopted Adults service.

Please give as much information as possible to help us deal with your request.

A friend or relative can attend the appointment with you for support if wished. If you were adopted on or after 12 November 1975 you do not have to attend a meeting to receive this birth certificate information but if you wanted to access your adoption file in addition, we would want to meet with you first.
