Training events in the 2019 to 2020 academic year

Course title: New to the role of Designated Teacher for looked-after and / or previously looked-after children

Target audience: Designated Teachers for looked-after and / or previously looked-after children from reception to Year 11, who are new to the role.

Course description: This course gives an overview of the requirements upon the Designated Teacher to fulfil their role effectively for both looked-after children and previously looked-after children. Topics covered include: voice of the child, pupil premium plus, raising awareness and staff training, SEN, mental health, partnership working, admissions.

Course title: ePEP system training and PEP quality training

Target audience: Designated Teachers for looked-after children from reception to Year 11.

Course description: The morning session will cover an overview of the Northamptonshire PEP process, the structure and requirements of the revised Northamptonshire ePEP, how to access and record data on a child or young person's PEP, and the timeframes for completing and reviewing a PEP. The afternoon session will cover how to produce a high quality personal education plan.

Other details: There will be a break between midday and 1pm but as this is a free course, lunch is not provided. Supermarkets are within a 5 to 10 minute walk. Tea and water is provided.

Course title: Refresher Designated Teacher for looked-after and / or previously looked-after children

Target audience: It is recommended that experienced Designated Teachers for looked-after and / or previously looked-after children from reception to Year 11, attend this training once every three years.

Course description: This course gives an overview of the requirements upon the Designated Teacher to fulfil their role effectively for both looked-after children and previously looked-after children. Topics covered include: voice of the child, pupil premium plus, raising awareness and staff training, SEN, mental health, partnership working, admissions.

Course title: Designated Teacher Bitesize training: effecting change and identifying the needs of looked-after and previously looked-after children

Target audience: Designated Teachers for looked-after and / or previously looked-after children from reception to Year 11.

Course description: Part 1 of the session looks at issues in considering whole school change to promote the education of looked-after and previously looked-after children. Part 2 explores how we can accurately identify the needs of these children.

Course title: Designated Teacher Bitesize training: relationships and behaviour management

Target audience: Designated Teachers for looked-after and / or previously looked-after children from reception to Year 11.

Course description: Part 1 of the session looks at how key adults, team around the child and whole school systems can contribute to positive relationships with looked-after and previously looked-after children. Part 2 considers how traditional behaviour management approaches can be reimagined to support inclusion and success for all.

Course title: Designated Teacher Bitesize training: empathic responses to behaviour and partnership working

Target audience: Designated Teachers for looked-after and / or previously looked-after children from reception to Year 11.

Course description: Part 1 of the session explores some of the strategies to respond empathically to student behaviour. Part 2 considers how multi-agency partnership working can strengthen children's outcomes.

Course title: Designated Teacher Bitesize training: adapting the curriculum and supporting staff

Target audience: Designated Teachers for looked-after and / or previously looked-after children from reception to Year 11.

Course description: Academic considerations and staff well-being can often fall by the wayside with children who have high levels of social, emotional and mental health needs. However, the curriculum and support of staff are both necessary aspects of school life to get right in order to promote success for all. Practical ideas to address these two issues will be explored.

Course Title: Designated Governor Training

Target audience: Nominated governors for looked-after and previously looked-after children, interested governors and Chairs.

Course description: The importance of governors advocating for looked-after and previously looked-after children (LAC and PLAC). How to support and challenge the Designated Teacher to ensure all LAC and PLAC are receiving a high quality education which suits their individual needs. Learn more about the processes and policies associated with LAC and PLAC including pupil premium plus funding.

Course title: Parents and guardians of previously looked-after children: promoting the education of previously looked-after children

Target audience: Parents and guardians of children from reception to year 11 who have been adopted, or subject to a special guardianship / child arrangements order. If your child is outside this age range you are welcome to attend.

Course description: This session looks at how parents and guardians can work with schools effectively to support their child's education. It explores the duties schools have regarding previously looked-after children and advises on how parents and guardians can best advocate for their child.

Areas covered include: educational achievement of PLAC, what schools must do, relationship building with school, pupil premium plus, information sharing, admissions, and choosing a good school.
