Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment
The Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) looks at the health needs of the population of Northamptonshire, the current provision of pharmaceutical services by pharmacies, dispensing appliance contractors (DACs) and dispensing doctors within and outside of the county. It identifies any gaps in the provision of those services and any that may arise within the lifetime of the document.
Pharmaceutical services are defined in legislation as those services that NHS England commissions from pharmacies and DACs, and the dispensing service provided by some GP practices. It does not include any services commissioned from pharmacies by the council or the CCGs. It also doesn’t include the hospital pharmacies or pharmacy departments. The PNA is used by those looking to open a new pharmacy or DAC premises, and by NHS England in the determination of such applications.
