This year’s Bandstand Marathon is set to take place in Corby, Northampton and Wellingborough on Sunday 26th September.

The Bandstand Marathon is a chance to showcase great music and to bring these important cultural venues back into use.

It’s part of the Cultural Olympiad; a celebration of the cultures, people and languages in the UK and around the world in the lead up to the 2012 games.

In Northamptonshire, events are planned in the following locations on Sunday 26th September:

  • Abington Park, Northampton
  • Bassetts Park, Wellingborough
  • Coronation Park, Corby

Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage, county council cabinet member for customers and communities said: “This is all part of our ongoing work with our partners to bring more music and culture to people in the county as part of the Cultural Olympiad in the lead up to the 2012 games. The event is an also opportunity to make good use of the beautiful bandstands in three of Northamptonshire’s parks.”

The first Bandstand Marathon took place in 2008 as part of the launch of the Cultural Olympiad and was organised by Music Development Agency, SUPERACT!

At that time, 50 concerts took place over 50 venues – this year in 2010, it is expected that the Bandstand Marathon will reach 180 locations across England and Wales, with an audience of over 50,000 people.
