Northamptonshire County Council carried out a precautionary gritting of the network at 7:00 p.m. yesterday.
Last night was not as cold as had been forecast but temperatures still fell to well below zero with the lowest road surface temperature recorded at Farthinghoe at minus 5C.
Today is expected to be dry with some cloud and any fog should gradually thin to leave some sunshine.
Conditions will remain cold with road surface temperatures below zero for much of the time. It should stay cold tonight with a mixture of sleet and snow expected to arrive from the west from around 11:00 p.m. onwards. Up to 1-3cm of snow is possible overnight together with some icy stretches.
Early indications show that air temperatures could dip as low as minus 5C with road surfaces dropping to minus 6.5C.
The county council’s website shows the gritting routes along with advice for drivers and pedestrians.
