With air and road temperatures well below freezing Northamptonshire County Council’s gritting teams have carried out treatment to road surfaces three times in the past 24 hours.

Crews gritted the county’s precautionary network at 3:00 a.m. Sunday and again at 4:00 p.m. before going back on the roads at 3:00 a.m. today.

With air temperatures set to drop to minus 7.5C and road surface temperatures forecast to plummet to minus 9C overnight, crews will be sent out at midnight to carry out another precautionary gritting.

Temperatures are expected to be less cold over the next few days but road surface temperatures will still be at minus 7.5C on Tuesday night. There is also a chance of some snow showers on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The current expectation is for temperatures to rise again into Thursday with the likelihood of some rain showers. However conditions at the moment are very changeable.

The county council’s website shows the gritting routes and has advice for drivers and pedestrians.
