With air and road temperatures plummeting to minus 10C in parts of the county last night Northamptonshire County Council is urging motorists to drive with care on the roads.
Grit becomes less effective at temperatures below minus 5C and will have no effect on ice in temperatures below minus 10C.
Today gritting crews have been treating the secondary network in the county as well as carrying out gritting on footpaths in town centres at 5:00 a.m.
With temperatures forecast to be below freezing again tonight gritting crews will be going out again.
The authority is also reiterating the message that the county council’s grit bins are for use on roads and public footpaths only.
The council provides more than 1,700 grit bins countywide for use in adverse weather.
However there have been some reports of people using this grit for use on their own drives, which is theft.
The county council is monitoring the usage of its grit bins and if there is evidence that the bin is being misused then it could be removed.
The county council’s website shows the gritting routes and has advice for drivers and pedestrians.
