With temperatures forecast to drop to minus 8.5C overnight Northamptonshire County Council’s gritting teams will head out at 6pm today to carry out a treatment of the precautionary network.

Road surface temperatures are set to fall even lower to minus 9.5C and the snowdesk will be in operation to coordinate the gritting fleet across the county.

This afternoon will be overcast, misty and exceptionally cold. Patchy light snow was forecast to reach southernmost areas from 2pm and this snow will move erratically northwards.

The northern third of the county will have barely any snow flurries and some places may stay dry here.

In the southern part of the county the snow will continue on and off until mid evening.

It is expected to be mainly dry and overcast tonight and the odd light snow flurry still possible.

From Northampton southwards, 1-2cm may settle in rural areas by mid evening while only a dusting is expected in the north.
