Ingram Electrics Ltd has become the 70th member of Northamptonshire County Council’s Buy With Confidence scheme.

The trading standards scheme was first launched in July 2010 to help residents who are looking for a reliable local tradesperson to carry out work in their homes or gardens.

The scheme brings together a list of gardeners, plumbers, builders, electricians and other types of local businesses, each of which has been individually checked for trustworthiness and compliance with consumer protection laws.

Officers from trading standards visit and vet every applicant and they are only accepted onto the scheme if they pass stringent checks including complaints, County Court judgements, credit rating, company details, directors background and credit licensing (if applicable). Every trader who goes into customer’s homes or garden also must have undergone a basic CRB check.

References are taken from previous customers and feedback cards are left with every job so that trading standards can check that their standards aren’t slipping. Traders are revisited every year and once accepted on the scheme, are entitled to display the Buy with Confidence logo to show their customers the sign of trust.

Jonathan Ingram, director of Northampton-based Ingram Electrics Ltd said: “I joined Buy With Confidence to give my customers peace of mind and to get the recognition that I am a company that has reached a required standard and has the backing of trading standards”

Trading standards are always looking for more reputable Northamptonshire traders to apply to join the scheme. Councillor Ben Smith, county council cabinet member for environment said: “Trading standards are often contacted by residents who are looking for a list of recommended tradespeople and so we launched this scheme to help them to find a trusted and reputable trader who has been trading standards approved.

“We always need new members for the scheme so we invite all the honest, hardworking and reputable traders in Northamptonshire to join the 70 traders who have already signed up to the scheme and show their customers the sign of trust.”

Details of traders who have been accepted on to the scheme are available on the Buy with Confidence webpages or by telephoning the county council on 01064 236236 or Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.
