With the success of British cyclist Bradley Wiggins in the Tour de France and a return to warm, sunny weather, Northamptonshire County Council is encouraging people to consider its Summer of Cycling festival.

The season-long celebration of pedal power is comprised of a number of cycle-themed events throughout the county.

Regular cycling brings health benefits through exercise but other pluses come through cutting congestion on the roads therefore reducing pollution.

Cllr Andre Gonzalez De Savage, county council cabinet member for infrastructure and public protection, said: “This respite from the dreadful summer weather we’d experienced so far provides ideal conditions to take to the roads and give cycling a go.

“Added to this we’ve got the success of Bradley Wiggins in the Tour de France, which will hopefully provide an inspiration to cyclists of all abilities to get on the saddle more.

“The Summer of Cycling is about celebrating all that’s good about cycling and the huge amount of benefits it brings, from health and wellbeing to the environmental advantages.

“Members of the public are encouraged to bring their bikes along to each of the events to take part in a range of activities with the chance to win some great prizes.”

Many of the Summer of Cycling events have already taken place but there are plenty still to come, including:

• The Titchmarsh Castle Bike Ride – Sunday, July 29 www.titchmarsh.info

• Wicksteed’s Wonderful Wheeled Weekend – Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5

• Northampton Celebration of Cycling and Connect 2 cycle-route launch – Saturday, August 11. People who walk or cycle the route on the day can enter a prize draw to win a bike worth £400 donated by Halfords.

Five circular cycle routes have also been arranged especially for the summer at a number of locations across the county to suit a range of abilities:

• Pitsford Reservoir
• Wellingborough town
• Oundle rural
• Salcey Forest
• Daventry town
