A counterfeit jewellery importer and distributer has received a custodial sentence following an prosecution by Northamptonshire County Council’s trading standards service.

At Northampton Crown Court on Friday (18th January) Jinbao Zhang received a 30-month custodial sentence.

In August 2011, a vehicle driven by Zhang was stopped by Northamptonshire Police while travelling north on the M1.

A number of counterfeit items were seized including jewellery, purses and bags with various fashion logos such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Juicy Couture, Paul’s Boutique, Pandora, Links, Thomas Sabo and Tiffany & Co.

It is estimated the items seized had a value of around £500,000 if they had been sold as genuine items.

A spokesperson from Northamptonshire County Council trading standards said: “Not only does the sale of counterfeit goods undermine the business of legitimate retailers, it also pushes up the price of genuine products.

"We will continue to take action wherever appropriate and consumers should also be aware when being offered products at seemingly bargain prices. Anyone who has information on the supply of counterfeit goods should contact trading standards by telephoning Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 040506.”
