The joys and benefits of cycling will be showcased in a summer-long festival which aims to encourage people to consider choosing two-wheeled transport over four.

What's it about?

Northamptonshire County Council, with partners, has organised the Summer of Cycling celebration which is comprised of a number of cycle-themed events throughout the county.

Regular cycling brings health benefits through exercise but other pluses come through cutting congestion on the roads therefore reducing pollution.

Cllr Michael Clarke, county council cabinet member for transport, highways and environment, said: “The Summer of Cycling is about celebrating all that’s good about cycling and the huge amount of benefits it brings, from health and wellbeing to the environmental advantages.

“Cycling is also a very cheap mode of transport and travelling by bike can hugely reduce commuting costs for many.

“What this festival does is demonstrate how easy it is to get into cycling and taking those first few steps into using it as a method of travel.

“Members of the public are encouraged to bring their bikes along to each of the events to take part in a range of activities and to pledge to cycle more for the chance to win some great prizes.”

Summer of Cycling was launched this weekend with a bike parade leading the Northampton Carnival.
