Ofsted inspectors have praised Northamptonshire’s Hospital and Outreach Education service for the quality of its teaching and achievement of pupils.
The hospital and outreach education service is delivered by Northamptonshire County Council to provide teaching for children and young people who are unable to attend school full-time due to medical and/or mental health issues.
The inspection took place in October and the service was rated outstanding in all areas, with the headteacher’s inspirational leadership, well-planned curriculum and pupils’ attitude to learning all being highly praised.
The inspectors also commented that communication with the pupils’ home schools, families and other agencies is outstanding, while they described the teachers as highly skilled in working with students with mental health difficulties and medical conditions.
Cllr Matthew Golby, cabinet member for learning, skills and education, said: “This Ofsted report is full of glowing praise for the council’s hospital and outreach education service, which is a wonderful endorsement of the hard work and dedication of the entire team.
“It’s imperative that children with health needs are able to continue their education when they are unable to attend school full-time and this report demonstrates that not only are they able to continue their studies but they are also encouraged to reach the highest levels of attainment.
“The teachers and staff should be very proud of this outstanding report, which is thoroughly deserved.”
The Ofsted report makes two recommendations for further improvement:
- Teachers should always challenge the most able students as much as they can
- Teachers should direct additional staff including teaching assistants so that they extend students’ learning appropriately
The Hospital and Outreach Education service works with three to 18-year-olds and provides teaching in Northampton and Kettering General Hospitals, two psychiatric units in Northampton and two outreach centres, one in Northampton and one in Kettering.
