Northamptonshire residents are being challenged to stop drinking for 31 days and sign up to Dry January 2015.
Adopting healthier lifestyles, saving money and losing weight are just three of the benefits that people can experience if they participate in the Alcohol Concern initiative.
Dry January is also a chance for people to reassess their relationship with alcohol as excessive drinking can dramatically increase the risk of a wide range of health problems including high blood pressure, liver disease, cancer and dementia.
Reduce your intake
Evidence from Alcohol Concern shows that six months after completing a Dry January, participants not only drink less frequently and less per drinking day, but they also get drunk less.
Dry January is being backed by Northamptonshire County Council and Northamptonshire Police, with both organisations encouraging their staff to take part in the 31-day challenge.
County council cabinet member for public health and wellbeing and chairman of the county’s health and wellbeing board Councillor Robin Brown said: “Once the excesses of Christmas are over, many of us plan to start the year in a healthy way. Dry January is a great way to do this, and a chance for people to reset their relationship with alcohol.
“People who have taken part in previous years have said that after 31 days without alcohol they sleep better, lose weight and generally feel more energetic. Plus they have proved to themselves that they can say no to a drink or two, and that they can still have a good time without having to drink alcohol."
Chief Constable Adrian Lee said: “I fully support any initiative which encourages people to think responsibly about their relationship with alcohol.
“Heavy drinking isn’t just a problem for employers and the economy. It can lead to social, psychological and medical problems and as we all know too well, impacts on all aspects of policing.”
Chief Inspector Dave Spencer said: “I’m signed up. Last year I took the challenge and by the end of it I felt fitter, healthier and managed to lose a few pounds. Hopefully I’ll lose a few more in January 2015!”
