Parents and carers are being encouraged to take their children along to a library or children centre as part of this year’s National Bookstart Week (9th – 15th June).

National Bookstart Week

National Bookstart Week is an annual celebration of Bookstart, the flagship reading programme from national charity, Booktrust. Bookstart aims to help every child to develop a lifelong love of reading that will give them a flying start in life by gifting free books to every child.

This year’s theme is My Hero, giving families the perfect opportunity to enjoy their favourite hero stories, books, rhymes and enter a world of adventure and imagination.
Events are taking place in Northamptonshire County Council’s libraries and in children’s centres, and will include local heroes such as police community support officers, firefighters and everyday family heroes.

At all National Bookstart events a special version of Super Duck by popular children’s author Jez Alborough will be given as a free gift for children who take part. This book will also be available from Brackley and Northampton Foodbanks.

The fun-filled events will include rhymes, storytelling and other activities to encourage children and their parents and carers to enjoy songs, rhymes, rhythm and movement together.

Highlights include:

  • At Irthlingborough Library, in partnership with Irthlingborough Children’s Centre a Super Hero Day will be held on June 12th 1.30pm – 3pm.
  • At Far Cotton Library on 11th June from 10.30am there will be a Grandmother’s Day. Children will be encouraged to bring their grannies along and the local knit and knatter group will provide tea and cake. Grandparents are so often the heroes for families in so many ways, and sharing stories and rhymes helps to bring families together.
  • Nature Tots at Brixworth and Sywell Country Park will also be joining in the fun with sensory walks linking in with the Super Duck Characters.

Millions of families across the UK will come together during National Bookstart Week to discover stories, rhymes and reading. Further activities to download are available from the Bookstart Website at: www.bookstart.org.uk
