Changes to on-street parking in Northampton town centre have now been agreed, and will be coming into operation from 26 November onwards.
The changes aim to improve the availability of parking, reduce congestion and bring consistency to the service across the town.
On-street parking charges in Northampton are currently in operation between 8:00am and 6:00pm, Monday to Saturday.
The change will see parking charges from 7:00am to 7:00pm, seven days a week with any one-hour bays becoming two-hour to bring uniformity.
Other changes include additional on-street parking bays in the town centre and the introduction of four-hour bays in St John’s Street and Derngate to offer visitors more flexibility when looking to park for longer periods.
Changes also comprise new designated loading areas and disabled bays in St Giles Street and the introduction of pay and display charges for parking bays located in Abington Street.
Cllr Ian Morris, county council cabinet member for transport, highways and environment, said:
“The review of the town centre parking restrictions had been long overdue, and the amendments reflect changes in the demand for parking, which is now seven days a week.
“I fully support the changes for Northampton town centre.
“I believe that the increase in the amount of parking spaces and to extend the charging hours will make the restrictions clearer and simpler, whilst encouraging the turnover of parking spaces which will benefit local businesses.”
During the changes, motorists are reminded to check the information displayed on traffic signs and follow directions on ticket machines before parking.
